Strengthening Executive Functions Through Inclusive Play

Executive functions are the “air traffic control” system of the brain—they manage focus, impulse control, and working memory. For youth with ADHD, these systems often need extra support. Our project, Ready to GO, identifies Go as a powerful tool to strengthen these components.

Through the game, we specifically target:

  • Working Memory: Keeping track of patterns and past moves.
  • Inhibitory Control: Resisting the urge to make a quick, uncalculated move.
  • Cognitive Flexibility: Seeing the board from the opponent’s perspective.

The impact of our project goes beyond the game itself. By developing a training format that will be tested in Nis, Serbia, we are providing educators with the skills to deliver inclusive education that truly works. Our goal is to heighten awareness of Go as an educational tool that fosters inclusion and improves learning outcomes for all.
