Boosting Strategic Thinking: Planning Beyond the Next Move
Strategic thinking is a vital life skill, yet it can be particularly challenging for youth with ADHD who may struggle with impulsivity. The “Ready to GO” project uses the game of Go as a safe, engaging laboratory for strategic development.
Go is a game of territory and balance. It challenges players to anticipate their opponent’s moves and plan several steps ahead. Our adapted methodology focuses on helping players:
- Anticipate consequences: Understanding that every action has a reaction on the board.
- Resource Management: Learning how to use limited “stones” to achieve the maximum impact.
- Adaptability: Shifting strategies when the situation changes, a key skill for real-world resilience.
Through our upcoming comprehensive toolkit, youth workers will be equipped with specific exercises designed to translate these board-game strategies into everyday problem-solving skills for young people.
